NFC Award being buried

Balochistan government has been facing severe economic problems as the exchequer is empty and the federal government is not willing to pay the due royalties and the province share in the NFC award. As a result, the province’s financial crisis has deepened. The development projects in the province have come to a thaw.  Flood victims are seeking support, so if the province gets it share in the NFC, it could support them

Lawmakers from both sides in the provincial assembly complained that Islamabad was not paying the province’s share under the NFC award. Balochistan finance minister Zamrak khan Piralzai has warned the center that the provincial assembly would be dissolved if the federal government didn’t pay the province its share under the national finance commission award. Earlier, Balochistan chief minister mir Abdul Qudoos Bizenjo demanded the immediate release of the provinces. During the session, Sanaullah Baloch of the opposition BNP-mengal said Balochistan’s representative was not invited for talks with the if. Speaking at a point of order, Mr Baloch said the house should adopt a resolution and urged the federal government to ensure Balochistan’s representation during the next round of talks. The opposition lawmaker’s suggestions also found voices of support from the treasury benches.

The prevailing NFC award sets aside a provincial share of 57.5 per cent in the so-called divisible pool, which consists of income and corporate tax, sales tax on goods, and excise and import duties collected by the federal government. The remaining 42.5pc funds under the divisible pool stay within the federal government.

The government’s third priority, according to the PBC, should be to motivate the public to conserve energy through effective communication. The government should lead by example in conservation and by adopting an austerity program.  Lastly, the government should develop a cross-party consensus on at least the key reforms to address the immediate challenges.
