The capital city of Balochistan now appears to be in a state of negligence, roads and pathways are broken due to commercial and domestic purposes. Ironically, the roads, streets and pathways are not even repaired after broken and are left at the mercy of the Metropolitan Corporation Quetta (MCQ) further polluting the environment. The old city is converted into slums by ignoring the building code and town planning.
Due to a lack of necessary facilities in the province, people of rural areas rushed to the city and settled here permanently. People living in the city still depend on the burning of wood for their daily lives, resultantly greenery is diminishing in Quetta city. Counting for the reasons, decreasing greenery is the less availability of water and the careless attitude of citizens; Obvious known fact that everywhere air pollution is the leading cause of heat strokes and breathing problems. Environmental hazards are compromising the health and economy of the city. Ironically, there are various unregistered industries and factories that not only harm the environment but also are the major cause of emission of poisonous gases.
The Pakistani cities including Quetta are right in the middle of several fault lines regarding climate change, which has brought increasing heat and unbearable air pollution. The question is how our cities should respond as about fifty percent of the population lives in urban areas.
There were more than 0.8m deaths worldwide due to climate change. She said Ella in the UK was the first person who died due to air pollution and the world came to know the real implications of the climate change. She referred to a recent research done in Lahore, showing 5,000 premature babies deaths attributed to air pollution.
The more spread out city would have more effect on climate change; Stressing public transport to reduce pollution caused by cars and personal transport. climate change was being discussed at the federal level as well as at the provincial level but there was hardly any talk at the local level, which was a challenge. The debate on climate change should go down to the level of the communities and the citizens, so that there could be voice at their level regarding.
The government especially the bureaucracy need to focus on the proper planning of the city or else the situation will get worsened. In the past, the city was run and managed by politicians that had merged from Madrassa background and had no clue of city planning or any urbanization that is who this little London turned into a slum. There is still politicians that have no affections for the provincial capital and they pour their development funds into their own constituencies. Government must chalk a long term and short term plans for the beatification and restoration of Quetta.
