GWADAR (6 AM Report): Gwadar port has left behind other ports of Pakistan in wheat shipment and processing and import of wheat through Gwadar port will boost commercial activities in Gwadar, said and official handout issued here on Tuesday.
It further said that Gwadar port along has the fastest stevedoring services and charges no demurrage and storage fee.
It further added that out of total nine ships bringing wheat to Gwadar port so far four ships including MV Leela Chennai, MV Rich, MV Viroda and MV Dorado, among others, have arrived at Gwadar. China Overseas Ports Holding Company (COPHC) authorities said that despite many difficulties, the Gwadar port is trying to expeditiously handle the import of two lakh metric tonnes of wheat from Russia in the last 25 days. It further added that about 250,000 metric tons of wheat are left at Gwadar port and since March 2 when the first ship anchored at Gwadar port, zero handling loss was observed for export and delivery of wheat.
The authorities said that all loading, off-loading and transportation is precisely handled and managed by the East Bay Expressway which exclusively connects with the Makran Coastal Highway, the only route used for the movement of wheat-laden trucks bypassing the city roads.
A transporter based in Gwadar said that they used to pass through the city roads which not only put additional burden on the local city but also affected the movement of trucks but Gwadar Port connectivity with East Bay Express has streamlined the activity. China Overseas Ports Holding Company, Trading Corporation of Pakistan, Pakistan Agricultural Storage and Services Corporation Limited, Pakistan Customs and National Logistics Cell, Gwadar Free Zone and GITL are all working in coordination.
An official of the Ministry of National Food Security and Research said that NEC is transporting wheat from Gwadar port to Pasco storage centers through the shortest and feasible route to lift the million metric tonnes of wheat allocated under the G-to-G arrangement.
An official of Gwadar International Terminals Limited said that Gwadar port has successfully handled 200,000 metric tons, the remaining 250,000 metric tons of wheat will be processed accordingly, terming the import of wheat through Gwadar port as a new milestone. He said that the import of wheat will promote commercial activities in Gwadar. He added, “It will also boost employment potential as when the hustling activities begin, skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled manpower is required to handle the full scale of work.”
