Reports shows miserable conditions of jails in Balochistan

QUETTA (6 AM Report): The lack of medical facilities for prisoners in Balochistan’s jails has become a serious issue. According to reports, prisons in Mach, Gadani, Khuzdar, Mastung, and Zhob, as well as districts in Quetta, Sibi, Dera Murad Jamali, Turbat, Loralai, Nushki, and Pishin, are facing a shortage of medical facilities.
These prisons house around 3,000 prisoners, including 50 women and 60 awaiting death sentences. The situation is even more alarming as there are no doctors in seven out of the 12 prisons in the province.
Furthermore, only one lady doctor is posted in the district jail, while the other three jails have vacant positions for lady doctors. The lack of city scan and MRI machines is also a major concern, although x-ray machines and a small lab are available in three of the province’s jails.
In light of this situation, IG Jails Balochistan Shujauddin Kasi has written a letter to the Health Department expressing his concern over the budget for medicines in the province’s prisons being cut by more than half, and the shortage of doctors. The letter highlights the need for immediate action to address the situation, including providing more doctors and increasing the budget for medicines.
The authorities have been urged to take immediate action to address the issue and provide adequate medical facilities to prisoners in Balochistan’s jails.
