QUETTA (6 AM Report): An event was organized in Balochistan in association with the Maternal, Newborn and Child Health Program (MNCH) and Mercy Corps to celebrate the International Day of Midwives, on Saturday.
Speakers at the event emphasized the importance of saving children during pre-birth and post-birth, and highlighted the crucial role of midwives in achieving this goal. They stressed the need for 300,000 midwives in Pakistan to reduce maternal and infant mortality rates.
Dr. Noor Mohammad Qazi, DG Health Services Balochistan, Education Attaché Afghan Consulate Noorullah Sahib, and several other health specialists, policy makers, and midwives participated in the event.
The celebration aimed to pay tribute to midwives for their valuable services in protecting the health of mothers and newborns.
Provincial Coordinator MNCH Dr. Ismail Mirwani stated that the theme of Midwifery 2023 is “Together Again: From Evidence to Reality,” and emphasized the importance of reducing maternal mortality rates and increasing the proportion of births attended by skilled health professionals by 2030 to meet the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
MS Civil Hospital Quetta Dr. Ishaq Panizai emphasized that midwifery care is a fundamental element of primary health care and provides new parents with physical well-being, confidence, and self-esteem that comes from a positive birth experience. Through breastfeeding support, nutrition education, and family planning, midwives can provide a better environment for the health of future generations.
The promotion of community midwifery is an essential component of the maternal, newborn, and child health programs in Balochistan. The event highlighted the need for more midwives in Pakistan and stressed the crucial role they play in achieving better health outcomes for mothers and children.
