Says PHC’s decision is violation of SC’s verdict; PTI will not boycott elections

ISLAMABAD (Online): Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan announced challenging the Peshawar High Court’s (PHC) decision to get back the party’s election symbol, Bat, in the Supreme Court of Pakistan tomorrow (Thursday).

Gohar talked to the media after a meeting with PTI’s founding chairman Imran Khan in Adiala Jail and expressed determination that his party will not boycott the general elections in any case.

Gohar said PHC’s decision to return the election symbol was given in an emergency and a violation of the SC’s verdict that withdrawing the election symbol from the party is equivalent to ending the party.

It is strongly believed that the SC will not let this matter of the election symbol go like this as taking back the bat from PTI will question the legitimacy of the election, he said adding that if the Apex Court does not restore the election symbol of Bat of the PTI, then the independent candidate will get different electoral symbols, which will result in the defeat of democracy and a stable parliament.

Anyhow, the PTI chairman categorically stated that even if the bat symbol is not restored, it will be the basis of horse-trading.

Answering a question, he confirmed that if the PTI’s election symbol is withdrawn, plan B must be there.

Meanwhile, the PTI chief also said that his party would not boycott the election. “We will boycott [the polls] under any circumstances,” he said, adding: “We will urge the SC — the ‘bat’ is not necessary, give us some other symbol.

“If the Supreme Court does not restore the bat, all the PTI candidates would the contest elections independently,” he added.

Commenting on the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) arguments in the PHC, he said it was a misunderstanding that the Commission was not heard, the hearing was held for 4 hours that day when the party symbol was restored earlier. He said taking the bat from PTI will question the legitimacy of the election and by conducting free elections in 859 seats, they will lay the foundation of corruption.

If there is no free and fair election, the economy will suffer, he said adding that if the party with 80% credibility is out, there will be loss.

Gohar said they have indicated that the PTI’s team of under-19s will fight the heavyweights in elections but they are still nervous about it.

Replying to a query, PTI Chairman Gohar clarified that he did not hold any meeting with anyone and he also did not receive any call or threat.

He also said that yesterday he did not have any meeting with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and they also did not warn them that they will withdraw their support.
