Balochistan’s education system is set for a shakeup, with Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti vowing to purge the department of absentee teachers and political interference. In a high-level meeting, the government took several key decisions:, 2,000 teachers identified as chronically absent will be dismissed.
Political pressure in appointments will be eliminated, with a focus on meritocracy for selecting officers and academic leaders.
Non-functional schools will be brought back online, with teacher shortages addressed through recruitment .A phased rollout of biometric attendance systems will ensure teachers are present in their schools. Dera Bugti and Musakhail districts will be the first to pilot this system. Local body representatives will be included in district education groups to monitor teacher attendance and hold education officers accountable. The Chief Minister himself plans surprise visits to remote areas to check on attendance and address negligence.these measures aim to improve the province’s literacy rate and the overall quality of education. The initiative comes amidst reports of widespread teacher absenteeism and dysfunctional schools while challenges remain, including defining “non functional schools” and ensuring effective implementation, Balochistan’s government appears committed to tackling these issues. The involvement of local bodies and the Chief Minister’s personal commitment to oversight offer a glimmer of hope for the province’s educational future.
