Climate change authority case: SC summons climate change secretary, all four provincial secretaries

ISLAMABAD (Online): Supreme Court (SC) has summoned secretary climate change and all the four secretaries on next hearing in the case pertaining to establishment of Climate Change Authority (CCA).

The court has directed all the four chief secretaries to appear through video link.

Justice Mansoor Ali Shah remarked why the Punjab government could not frame policy regarding climate change so far. What steps have been taken by Punjab government to deal with the floods. Half of the trees planted under billion tree project have finished. Only planting the trees is not enough but they have to be looked after as well. We will ask from all chief secretaries what progress in making policy and implementing the policy.

During the hearing of the case government presented notification on establishment of climate change authority.

Justice Mansoor Ali Shah inquired authority has been set up but when it will become functional.

Additional attorney general told advertisement has been given for appointment of members of authority.  The process will be completed within two months.

The court further inquired tell us if any solid step has been taken in connection with climate change.

Additional Attorney general admitted there is no doubt in it that the attitude of federal and provincial government is not serious.

The court inquired if Punjab government has taken any practical step then tell us.

Justice Mansoor Ali Shah remarked it is wonder that climate change is not included in the priorities of Punjab government.

Advocate General KP said KP government had started billion tree Tsunami  . 70 lac trees were planted under this project. UN also acknowledged Billion tree Tsunami project.

Justice Mansoor   Ali Shah remarked half of the  trees planted under billion tree project have finished.

The court while summoning provincial chief secretaries adjourned the hearing till July 01.
