Solid waste is generated from discarded materials from different sources, including residential, commercial, institutional, and industrial activities. These activities increase the amount of waste in various areas, societies, and countries.
As environmentalists, we need to examine the types of waste being discarded. After that, we should manage it in a way that does not disturb the environment or cause any undesirable changes. First, we must take a sample of the waste and check if it can be recycled or reused.
Many items can be reused, but some cannot. Some can be recycled, while others cannot. The basic step should be to raise awareness and educate people that waste causes many unwanted changes in daily life and can lead to numerous problems.
We need to establish separate dustbins for each type of waste. Organic waste, inorganic waste, and other solid waste should each have different bins, with each dustbin color-coded. Organic waste should be recycled, for example, converted into fertilizer that plants and flowers can use. This will make society cleaner and more beautiful.
Other types of waste that cannot be turned into fertilizer can be remade and provided to those in need so they can use it again. Some waste can be recycled after being sent to factories, which can give it a new shape and make it useful once more.
In short, serious action is needed for solid waste management. In the educational sector, for example, the University of Balochistan has installed color-coded dustbins. However, due to lack of awareness, they are often misused, with all colors used for a single purpose and all waste thrown into one bin.
We need to take decisive action on solid waste management—not just in Quetta or Balochistan, but everywhere. We must use color-coded dustbins correctly and create awareness in society that some waste can be recycled, some can be reused, and some can be remade.
Ultimately, we need to take serious steps to ensure that everything is clean and organized. There will be no waste, the environment will be healthy, and no undesirable changes will occur.
